A Small Architecture for Dining, Open to the Mall

How can the sense of familiarity that Yamaya has always valued be expressed within an urban commercial complex? Rather than simply reproducing the design language of its existing restaurants, we reinterpreted the relationships between columns, beams, eaves, and light found in Japanese dining spaces, composing the restaurant as a small piece of architecture in its own right.

Within an island site surrounded by mall corridors, areas that allow views into the restaurant are carefully balanced with those that screen them. The space remains open to its surroundings while allowing guests to spend time without feeling overly exposed to the gaze of passers-by. Along the corridor-facing façades, a glow symbolic of the brand draws people’s attention. Inside, however, the materials and lighting remain deliberately understated, allowing the food and the presence of people to become the natural focus.

By balancing the visibility required in a commercial setting with the comfort needed to enjoy a relaxed meal, we sought to create a restaurant that feels familiar to its guests—a place to return to.
